An anonymous fellow who has been a customer of mine for a little while decided he wanted to build a "SV Killer" Hawk. A used race Hawk was purchased and dropped off at Hordpower for the full-tilt treatment. The goal was 80+hp. Obviously when you have a goal like that, the first thing you have to do is think about the reliability factor. The biggest problem is the crank, so the stock crank was taken out and replaced with a Falicon billet. Carrillo rods were used. The tranny was undercut, a Barnett kevlar clutch installed, plus an adjustable ignition rotor. That took care of the bottom end. To reach the horsepower goal I started off with a set of my lightweight 700cc pistons, stage 2 heads, 174x8 cams and Keihin 39mm FCR carbs. M4 took care of the exhaust. It was all buttoned up (how easy that sounds just writing it) and off to the dyno I went. The results were, well, a little disappointing. (see chart) Yes, it made almost 80hp and a respectable amount of torque, but I thought the midrange could be better and we were still a few hp shy on top. Back to the workbench.
