(Stock engine and kit exhaust vs. modified engine and kit exhaust) The last-minute thrashing continues. After Daytona we wanted to have a look inside the engine to see what if anything was wrong. Answer, not much, other than gack smeared into the rod bearings. I replaced the rod bearings and rebuilt the bottom end by the book. We wanted a bit more power, so the heads were milled .015", and I cleaned up the ports. The pistons also had to be machined to match the milled head. The cams were timed to stock spec (106 in, 110ex) mainly because there wasn't time to try anything else. The result was about a 5hp gain. I'm a bit puzzled by the way the power flattens out at high rpm, I think the ports need to be bigger and/or it needs a bigger airbox. Maybe we'll tackle that in the future... after the 848cc big bore kit is done, that is! Big thanks go out to Bruce and the BCM crew for fast parts delivery and great support!
